Leadership Wananga 2019 'Dare to Dream'

Whāia e koe te iti kahurangi; ki te tuohu koe me maunga teitei.

Pursue your treasured aspirations and if you falter, let it be only to insurmountable difficulties.

We select our interns because of their admirable ambition, vast aspirations and appetite for success. We chose our 2019 interns because of their courage to chase after their dreams. So, it was only fitting that the theme for our 2019 TupuToa leadership wānanga was ‘Dare to Dream’.

The day focused on providing our interns with inspirational nourishment, encouragement and motivation for their journeys. We showcased a number of renowned leaders who shared their pearls of wisdom in a fun, engaging and informative way. Our CEO Anne Fitisemanu kicked the day off, setting the tone by challenging Aotearoa’s future leaders to strive for the greatest heights.

Next on the agenda was key note speaker, Tamati Shepherd. Shepherd is a proud Te Whānau-ā-Apanui man and a partner at PwC. As a key member of the management consulting team in Wellington, Tamati leads the National Health Practice. Speaking on his experiences, his passion for helping our most vulnerable communities improve their social, financial and wellbeing outcomes shone through and showed our interns how they can use your position to better the world around you.

Next was Sina Wendt - CEO of Leadership NZ, who facilitated a panel discussion full of trail blazers including our very own co-chair of the TupuToa board, Rangimarie Hunia - CEO of Ngāti Whātua o Orākei. Wendt’s facilitating role highlighted her commitment to growing a generation of authentic and ethnical leaders for 21st century leadership. It was only fitting that she led this panel who provided the interns with valuable insights into their place as modern day Māori and Pasifika young leaders, and how they can make their unique mark on this world.

Our leadership wananga continued this rousing momentum with speeches and workshops from many of Aotearoa’s incredible Māori and Pasifika leaders including Alex Fala – CEO Vend, Hinemaua Rikirangi – MBIE Māori Development Executive Director, Leilani Tamu – MBIE Pacific Policy Team Manager, Tuiloma Lina-Jodie Samu – HR Advisor Pasifika, Charlotte Downes – Diversity and Inclusion Lead Air New Zealand, Mark Carrick – Diversity Inclusion Lead BNZ, and Michael Combs - Founder and CEO of CareerTrackers and CareerSeekers Australia. Finally, we ended our wānaga with some poetic justice from Dietrich Soakai – Brothers in Arms Youth Mentoring Programme Director, who lead our interns through a ‘Letters to Self’ workshop.

Our wānanga was jam packed with exceptional trail blazers who dared to dream. Their example is what we wanted our interns to gain insights from. And our interns did. Our interns know that they can succeed as these leaders have and that they can Dare to Dream.
