Managers Cultural Competency Trainings
We don’t just support our interns to succeed in the Internship Programme, we also endeavor to engage, equip and empower our partners/managers to receive interns and best assist them during their internships. To do this, each year we run a series of Managers Cultural Competency Trainings. Dynamic duo form Indigenous Growth Ltd, Mike Moka and Eroni Clarke, co-facilitate each of these sessions.
Each session is hosted at a partner premise. To commence each training a mihi whakatau takes place followed by some kai and then the workshop kicks off with an hour of whakawhanaunatanga – a period of introductions, sharing of pepeha and making connections with those in our groups. The session is light and fun, but the content is deep and rich in culture and tradition. Mike and Eroni challenge the managers to pronounce names correctly, to have empathy, to lean in and embrace the differences each intern will bring into their organisations.
The kaupapa or aim of this workshop is to better prepare managers, to welcome and awhi or embrace our TupuToa interns into your workplace.
Things we will cover include:
An introduction to understanding Te ao Māori and Pacific cultural values and world views;
Develop cultural capital and leadership of staff;
Take you through the TupuToa journey and our vision for the future;
Detail our expectations from you as manager, mentors and buddies to our interns; and
Provide tips and advice when working with our interns from a cultural perspective.
We’re thankful to our partners who make the effort to attend these trainings. We acknowledge that there are two sides to the coin and work must take place on both ends – with the interns and with the managers. And then together, we can truly see the transformation across corporate Aotearoa take place.
