Our annual TupuToa Noho Marae is an opportunity for interns and TupuToa team to collaborate and connect in a culturally and Mana enhancing environment; an overnight stay at a Marae. We believe that in integrating cultural practices in our programme this increases intern’ cultural capital and provides a familiar framework to facilitate wider learning. This is where we do different and deliver immense value for our interns.
TupuToa interns participate in development workshops facilitated by select members of the community. These are renowned leaders in our community and experts in their field. These development workshops cover a plethora of topics, from mental health and wellbeing, to business readiness, digital profiles, CV preparation and learning to dress the corporate part. This year, 15 guest speakers/facilitators/panelists addressed the interns as part of our objective to engage, equip and empower our interns to succeed in corporate New Zealand.
Mana whenua from Ngāti Whatua opened the noho with a powhiri and karakia and following some kai we commenced our first round of workshops beginning with Kylie Elsbury-Dawson, Acting Regional Disability Coordinator for CCS Disability Action. Kylie challenged our assumptions about disability and the workplace. She spoke on unconscious bias, the importance of acknowledging impairment and how we can better support our whanau with disabilities.
Further speakers on Day 1 included: Dr Monique Faleafa: Mental Healthy & Wellbeing, Jess Ah Kuoi: Business Readiness, CV and Interview preparation, Poncho Rivera-Pavan: LinkeIn and Digital Profiles, Nigel King: Professional Corporate Headshots, and Nora Swann: Dress 4 You.
Day 2 speakers included: Michael Moka: My Wairua My Mauri, Manase Lua: Culture in Action, a panel session titled ‘Women in Work’ featuring Lisa Tai, Sina Wendt, Tracey Taylor, and Pania Newton. And finally Essendon Tuitupou: Finding a Lesson in Everything and Brooke Roberts on Financial Literacy to conclude.
The Noho was a huge success and preparations have already begun on future events intended to help our interns grow and succeed in corporate Aotearoa this Summer and forever.
